Going Global:Prospects and Challenges for Chinese Firms
Chinese firms are heading abroad. Should the rest of the world be worried? Since 1999 when the Chinese government officially announced its “Go Global” policy to encourage Chinese firms to acquire assets abroad, Chinese foreign direct investment has rapidly increased from almost nothing to over US$77 billion in 2012. Most observers expect this outflow to continue growing, with reactions from host countries and local firms ranging from joy to panic.
For most of the Chinese firms, however, going abroad has so far been a frustrating and difficult journey. In this presentation, Professor White reviews the major challenges these firms face as they expand abroad, and describes how a few have managed to create value through their international operations. A brief introduction of Tsinghua-INSEAD EMBA Program will also be presented before the lecture.
