Introduction
China’s size and growth rate present truly unprecedented business opportunities and challenges to foreign and domestic businesses alike. With per-capita income doubling every 7 years in China, the world’s second largest economy changes more in one year than a developed economy changes in 5 years, a dynamic that has profound consequences for our thinking about product life cycles, talent management systems, investments in brands, and the development of sustainable competitive advantage.
If China were a small country, it would probably be enough to simply muddle along as best we can, with success or failure barely registering on the income statement of a leading global company. But, with 1.3 billion people and an estimated USD 1.1 trillion in growth next year—an amount greater than the combined growth in the EU, US, and Japan—China is simply too large and changing too fast to not develop a tailored approach to it. China’s size also means that the tailored approach isn’t only about local adaptation. Rather, it’s about realignment at the global and local levels in approaches to product and people development. In this discussion, we’ll share the insights we’ve gleaned over our 10 years in China on what makes business here so different and offer our perspective on how you and your organization can align your strategies to make the most of the opportunities that are emerging.
